WASHINGTON: After the announcement of the path breaking discovery of presence of water molecules on the lunar surface by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on September 24.The US Space Agency NASA sent two spacecraft namely US LCROSS crashing into the lunar surface last month in a dramatic experiment to probe Earth’s nearest neighbor for water.
The US LCROSS consisted of two pieces- an empty rocket stage to carve into the lunar surface and a small spacecraft to measure what was kicked up, but it too slammed into the surface. The rocket was followed four minutes later by a spacecraft equipped with cameras to record the impact which sent a huge plume of material billowing up from the bottom of the crater, untouched by sunlight for billions of years.”In the 20 to 30 meter crater we found maybe about a dozen, at least, two-gallon buckets of water. This is an initial result,” Colaprete said.”We are ecstatic,” said Anthony Colaprete, LCROSS project scientist and principal investigator at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California.
The $79 million lunar crater mission was launched in June to try to uncover the source of large quantities of hydrogen that had been measured by other spacecraft in lunar craters at the poles. At the end there is water on the moon which is actually creating more curiosity among the scientist to do more exploration but at this situation community made by Barrack Obama said no more space exploration can be done before 2020 because of the lack of funds for the return of the missions
